German and Israeli science ministers announce during Technion visit:

Germany and Israel to hold a “science summit” with the participation of scientists and government officials

Germany and Israel will hold a “science summit” at the beginning of next year with the participation of scientists, university and research institute heads, ministers and policymakers from the two countries. The summit will mark 25 years of cooperation between the Technion and Aachen University in Germany. This was announced by the science ministers of Germany and Israel during a joint visit last week to the Technion.

The German Minister of Education and Research, Prof. Annette Schavan, said that the two countries have a long tradition of scientific cooperation. “At the summit, actual projects will be presented which scientists from both countries will continue to develop together,” she emphasized. “”This is very rare and demonstrates just how strong the cooperation between the two countries is,” she added. The German Minister invited the Israeli Minister of Science, Prof. Daniel Hershkowitz, to join her in the opening next month of a large international scientific institute and to visit the institute for cancer research.

Science Minister, Prof. Daniel Hershkowitz, said that the unique summit was decided upon because of the very special relationship between Israeli and German science and research and thanks to the special personal connection between him and the German Minister. “The summit is a special idea – to bring together policymakers and all the leading researchers,” he added. “We all have very high expectations for this summit.”

The German Minister was accompanied by a large delegation of scientists and university heads. They heard a summary of Technion activities from Technion President Prof. Peretz Lavie and his Executive Vice President for Research, Prof. Oded Shmueli. They visited the Technion laboratories and the Alfred Mann Institute for Research and Development.
